De vergeten schat uit Friuli: Schioppettino

The forgotten treasure from Friuli: Schioppettino

Schioppettino has always done well in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, where it is also rarely referred to as Pocalza or Ribolla Nera. In fact, the latter name was historically the most used to describe both the grape variety and the wine made, while Schioppettino specifically referred to the wine produced in and around Prepotto and which was already considered to be of higher quality in the early twentieth century.

The characteristics of Schioppettino

Schioppettino can produce extremely elegant red wines, interspersed with:

  • Blackcurrants
  • Black cherries
  • Green peppercorns

These wines have a high acidity and soft tannins. As the wines age, they develop complex notes of brushwood and tar, but they are primarily characterized by a healthy acidity with an emphasis on green pepper.
