Producer: Valdangius

Valdangius, located in the historic Località San Marco in Montefalco, is an artisanal producer whose identity is entirely shaped by the terroir. San Marco has been regarded for generations as one of the region’s most suitable crus, thanks to its limestone-clay soils, optimal exposure, and pronounced temperature variations. This combination yields grapes with high aromatic concentration, natural freshness, and a clear structural backbone.

Montefalco – often called the “balcony of Umbria” – forms the natural setting where indigenous varieties such as Sagrantino and Trebbiano Spoletino reach their fullest expression. The mineral richness of the soil, the constant Apennine ventilation, and the centuries-old winemaking tradition create a microclimate that produces wines with depth, intensity, and long aging potential.

Valdangius practices artisanal and sustainable vineyard management, approaching each plot individually to let the specific soil characteristics speak. The philosophy is one of minimal intervention: listening to the rhythm of the seasons, respecting the uniqueness of each vintage, and allowing the terroir to determine the choices made in the cellar. The result is wines with a clear origin signature, characterized by precision and a pure translation of the Montefalco landscape.

Region: Montefalco - San Marco

Variety: 100% Sagrantino

Vintage: 2020

Vinification:

Cold maceration for 24 to 36 hours. Spontaneous fermentation of the grapes at controlled temperature in steel tanks. Maceration lasts 4 to 6 weeks; in the best years, it can even extend beyond 3 months. Aged in large French oak barrels for 24 months, followed by 12 months in amphora. The wine then rests for at least 18 months in bottle.

Color / bouquet / taste:

Ruby red color. On the nose rich and complex, with a beautifully integrated spicy note and elegant fruit tones of ripe plums and blackberries. On the palate, the wine remains full and at the same time refined, supported by ripe, well-integrated tannins. Unlike many other wines from the Sagrantino grape, this wine remains remarkably refined, with noble, perfectly integrated tannins that emphasize its elegance.

This producer invited us during Vinitaly, and we did not regret it: he makes wines that, like true gems, flawlessly express the intrinsic identity of each grape.

Food pairings:

  • Pairs excellently with grilled meats, roast lamb, wild boar, ossobuco, game stews, and aged cheeses.

Serving temperature: 16-18 °C

Aging potential: 15 years. Drink from 2025

Alcohol: 15%
