Frappato
Producer: Mikale
Location: The vineyards are located in the southeastern region of Sicily, mainly around the towns of Vittoria and Ragusa
Vintage: 2023
Variety: 100% Frappato
Vinification: The grapes are hand-harvested. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, where the wine then ages for 7 months before being bottled.
Color: Light ruby red
Aroma: Aromas of raspberries, strawberries and a hint of violets
Taste: Light and fruity, with a good balance between fruitiness and acidity
Pairing dishes: This wine pairs well with roasted red pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, turkey and cranberry sauce, tuna with caponata
How long it keeps: The wine is best enjoyed young, within 1 to 3 years after the harvest
At what temperature to drink: The ideal serving temperature is 15°C
This young winery has enormous talent. Finally, we found a high-level Frappato producer!
Mikale perfectly embodies the spirit of MMW: the winery was only founded in 2018, covers just three hectares, and currently produces only 5000 bottles per year. The vineyard is located in Contrada Bastonaca, near Ragusa in Sicily, in the heart of the production zones Frappato Vittoria and Cerasuolo di Vittoria, at about 210 meters above sea level, on sandy, clay, and loam soils. Interestingly, the family deliberately chose a soil with a higher clay content than usual (not obvious: sandy soils are much more common in this area); to produce wines with a bit more texture and a fuller structure.
Comments Ian D’Agata: 95/100
This is fantastic. Luminous bright red. Raspberry, strawberry, rose, violet and herb aromas are not just pure and intense, but represent an essence of Frappato. Sports only 12.5% alcohol while delivering a ton of flavor, we all need more wines like this one! Drink slightly cold and get ready to become a card-carrying member of the Frappato-Supporters club. Drinking window: 2025-2028.
