IGT Veneto Rosato "La Pessa da Piè"
Producer: Cantina Montenigo
Location: The vineyards are located in Montorio, a few kilometers from the center of Verona, in the Veneto region
Variety: 100% Molinara
Vintage: 2023
Vinification: The wine is made from 100% Molinara grapes. The grapes are hand-harvested in the first ten days of September. Fermentation takes place in cement tanks with skin maceration for one night, which provides a lively and intense pink colour. The wine then matures for six months in cement tanks
Colour: The wine has a rosé colour with orange reflections
Aroma: On the nose there are notes of mandarin and yellow fruits such as peach and apricot
Taste: The taste is fresh and enveloping, with a salty and mineral finish
Pairing dishes: This wine is delicious as an aperitif and pairs well with light starters. It is excellent with freshwater and sea fish, soft cheeses, vegetables, and even gourmet pizza. It also goes well with cold cuts and white meat.
How long it keeps: The wine is best enjoyed young to preserve its freshness and fruity aromas. It is recommended to consume the wine within a few years after the harvest.
At what temperature to drink: The ideal serving temperature is between 10° and 12°C
Comments and Score Ian D’Agata: 93/100
Bright medium pink colour. Strawberry and violet on the pretty nose. Then gently saline and spicy in the mouth, with excellent cut and clarity nicely framing the red berry and herb aromas and flavours. Finishes vibrant and juicy. Clean, fresh and delicious: 100% Molinara and that is why the wine bears the humourous name of "shoe cloth or cloth for your feet" alluding to the fact that Molinara was never much considered as a wine grape because of the light pink juicy wines it gives and has been been largely abandoned in Veneto. Yet this is another clear-cut example of how great, underrated and misunderstood this lovely grape variety is, and wat a mistake it was for Valpolicella, Bardolino and Amarone producers to do away with it in their never-ending quest for the biggest blackest meanest wine possible. A tragic mistake that few in the region willingly admit to but all of whom are paying the consequences of. These Montenigo grapes are Demeter-certified biodynamically grown. Drinking window: 2025-2027
