Calabria Rosato Il Marinetto
Producer: Sergio Arcuri
Region and background : Ciro Marina (Crotone) in Calabria
Fourth generation certified organic winemaker, Sergio Arcuri, grew up making traditional Cirò wine with his father, "Since he was three years old." Most vineyards in Cirò are located just a few meters above sea level, with some exceptions up to 300–400 meters high. The southern, southeastern, and western slopes of the village of Cirò, as well as the flat coastal strips around Cirò Marina, contain a lot of calcareous material. All six hectares of Arcuri are within this extremely dry Classico zone, cooled by maritime winds, with his highest plots reaching an altitude of 70 meters.
The Arcuri family has been making wine in Cirò since 1880, and with the knowledge passed down from generation to generation, they now know a lot about the interaction between Gaglioppo and the various terroirs. Sergio explains that the most important ingredient for high-quality Gaglioppo is clay, not visual splendor. Clay is found throughout the appellation and is especially deeply present in the flatter areas by the sea, as a result of the Lipuda river delta.
Variety: 100% Gaglioppo
Vintage: 2023
Vinification: mechanical pressing and destemming, vinification in open concrete vats with a short maceration on the skins for several hours without pressing the skins. Alcoholic fermentation started in a closed concrete tank with a fermentation starter
Aging: 5 months in concrete vats on fine lees and 3 months in bottle
Color: copper-colored.
Aroma: On the nose, fresh notes of wild strawberries and citrus fruits appear.
Taste: The taste is fresh, soft and characterized by excellent acidity. The finish is marked by a savory salty aftertaste. Rosé with good structure and intensity, ready to drink, but can easily last another 10 years!
A pure expression of the Gaglioppo from Ciro Marina!
Dish pairings: It pairs well with a dish of delicious local cold cuts or fish soups; try it with shellfish stews, octopus, or braised fish.
In short, very versatile.
Serving temperature: 10C°-15C°
Shelf life: until 2033
Don't miss this gem, for all your garden parties during the warm summer days.
About the producer: Sergio Arcuri is the grandmaster of the Gaglioppo grape. He knows perfectly how to let the terroir speak in this difficult-to-cultivate grape (quickly oxidizing). This Rosato has body, the light fruit touch and saline finish complete this gem perfectly.
With a few hectares and a small production, they can obtain four labels that represent the maximum expression of the area: "Aris", "Il Marinetto", "Più Vite Cirò Riserva" and "Libera i sensi". These are wines that taste like Calabria and evoke the scents and flavors of the Ionian Sea. Simple and pure, without tricks, with sulfur dioxide used to an absolute minimum and fermentations always spontaneous without ever adding selected yeasts.
