You know how sometimes you take a sip of wine and get just blown away by how good it is? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me after I first tasted the new vintage of the Primosic Malvasia this year: now, Primosic makes one outstanding wine after another each and every year but the Malvasia this year is especially good, even more remarkably so than it usually is. Readers should take note of this exceptional wine.
Made from the Malvasia Istriana grape variety, a native of Friuli Venezia Giulia, this is a classically dry white wine that punches way above its weight class. Bright golden-tinged straw green, it offers strongly floral notes of rose, geranium and iris to the white peach, fresh citrus fruit and pear aromas, all complicated by a strong mineral edge. Then fresh, juicy and vibrant in the mouth, which a delicate spicy pepperiness and noteworthy refreshing salinity to its orchard fruit and citrus flavours. The finish is nicely full yet lifted and lingers nicely on the long, suave, perfumed back end. Stainless steel-fermented and vinified, I love this wine’s precision and sneaky depth. Simply put, this is a great buy for the money: try it with spaghetti and clams (no cream), fish stew, grilled scampi, and aged cheeses. Drinking window: 2026-2031.
